Larry S. Moses
Larry Moses joined the professional staff of The Wexner Foundation in 1987 as the founding Director of the Wexner Graduate Fellowship Program. In 1998 he became President of the Foundation, and in 2003 he also assumed overall responsibility for the Wexner Heritage Foundation when it became part of The Wexner Foundation.
The Wexner Foundation devotes itself to the strengthening of Jewish leaders. To this end, the Foundation operates three large-scale leadership initiatives: The Wexner Graduate Fellowship/Davidson Scholars Program, The Wexner Heritage Program, and The Wexner Israel Fellowship Program at Harvard University.
In addition to the three leadership initiatives, which constitute the centerpiece of the Foundation’s work, Mr. Moses works closely with Harvard University’s Center for Public Leadership, which was developed through the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Wexner and is directed by David Gergen.
As Leslie and Abigail Wexner’s chief philanthropic advisor, Mr. Moses also facilitates the grant-making activities of the family, works closely with philanthropists and public leaders in North America and throughout the world, and maintains a special relationship with the agencies and institutions of Central Ohio. Mr. Moses sits on many international, national, and regional boards, civic and Jewish. His published articles and frequent keynote presentations, often centering on the challenges of leadership in modern life, have been widely circulated. He has been the recipient of numerous professional awards.
Prior to joining the professional staff of The Wexner Foundation, he served as the International Director of Hillel (1984-1987) in Washington, D.C. From 1980-1984, he was the Executive Director of the Bureau of Jewish Education in San Francisco. He began his career as the Hillel Director at San Francisco State University, where he also served as an instructor in the History Department (1975-1980).
Mr. Moses’ scholarly interests rest largely in the arena of Holocaust studies. His mother is a survivor of Auschwitz, and Mr. Moses has taught extensively on various historical, theological, and human dimensions of the Holocaust. He has also taught numerous university-level courses on Jewish mysticism, modern Jewish history, Jewish medical ethics, and medieval Jewish-Church relations.
Mr. Moses received a B.A. in philosophy from Indiana University, an M.A. in modern Jewish history from the Baltimore Hebrew University, and an M.S.W. from the University of Maryland School of Social Work and Community Planning. He also studied and taught at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In May 2006, Mr. Moses was the recipient of an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from Baltimore Hebrew University.
Mr. Moses is married to Dr. Susan Steinman, who is a psychotherapist, researcher, and author. They are the parents of Alana Moses (Brandeis ’08), who is currently a clinical psychology PhD. student at St. John’s University, and Danielle Moses, who is a junior at Bard College.
