36 Minutes LIVE: The Passover Series 5776

Our popular online series, "36 Minutes LIVE", will offer two zesty opportunities for alumni, members and fellows to meet, learn, discuss and prepare for Passover.  Rabbi Sharon Brous and Professor Danny Matt (bios below) will lead sessions at various times of day so that our alumni, fellows and members, from Israel to California and beyond, can come together online and learn.  The sessions are truly 36 minutes, so even the busiest people in our network can deepen their learning.  These calls will be facilitated by Angie Atkins, Director, Wexner Heritage Alumni, and are open to all of our constituents.

Tech and RSVP Information

We will be using a videoconference technology platform called Zoom, which is similar to Skype. Zoom is free and harmless to download, and allows us to see and hear each other so that we can have deep conversations in real time across the globe. To participate fully, you will need to be at a computer, iPad or smartphone with internet, a camera, mic and speakers. If you don’t have a camera or mic at your computer, you can still “zoom in” and just listen.  You can also dial in from a phone as you would for a regular conference call.  To register and receive dial-in information and texts, email Serena Covkin.  Please mention which sessions you plan to attend in your RSVP.  As registration is limited to 100 participants per session, please only register for the sessions you are certain to attend.

Rabbi Sharon Brous is the founding rabbi of IKAR, a thriving Jewish community that stands at the intersection of soulful, inventive spiritual and religious practice and a deep commitment to social justice.  Brous has been recognized as one of the nation’s leading rabbis by Newsweek/ The Daily Beast and among the 50 most influential American Jews by the Forward.  In 2013 she topped the Daily Beast list, which credited her with reanimating Jewish community and reenergizing prayer at a time of growing disaffection and declining affiliation.  She serves on the International Council of the New Israel Fund and rabbinic advisory to American Jewish World Service.  She lives in Los Angeles with her husband and their three children.

Daniel Matt, one of the world’s leading authorities on Kabbalah, has been featured in Time Magazine and has appeared on National Public Radio and the History Channel.  He has published over a dozen books, including The Essential Kabbalah (translated into seven languages), Zohar: Annotated and Explained, and God and the Big Bang: Discovering Harmony between Science and Spirituality.  Recently Daniel completed an 18-year project of translating and annotating the Zohar in English. Stanford University Press has now published his ninth volume of The Zohar: Pritzker Edition, concluding the Zohar’s main commentary on the Torah. For this work, Daniel has been honored with a National Jewish Book Award and a Koret Jewish Book Award.  The Koret award called his translation “a monumental contribution to the history of Jewish thought.”  For twenty years, Daniel served as professor at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California, and has also taught at Stanford University and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.  Daniel lives in  Berkeley with his wife Hana.
