The Foundation covers the cost of meals, programming and a single hotel room for delegates for the nights of 7/27 and 7/28 and a shuttle to and from Aspen Pitkin Airport. If you would like to extend your stay, for nights prior or following, please let Isaac Weiss, Program Coordinator, know. A supplemental fee, payable directly to the hotel will be your responsibility. You can check their website for applicable rates, currently about $450 per night, which does not include taxes and fees, but on which you will receive a courtesy discount of 20% off. Many delegates opt to come in for the shabbat before at their own expense, and it’s fine to stay in Aspen for those extra days if you prefer. Food is not provided but spontaneous hikes and other fun things and meals, including shabbat services in Aspen, are often part of the fun. Rabbi Shira Stutman, who is a Wexner Graduate Fellowship Alum and faculty for WHP is now serving as Rabbi at the Aspen Jewish Center and is willing to teach us or meet us on shabbat — if there is interest, email Angie.

Spouses are welcome to join us for meals and evening activities but do not participate in our meeting. There will also be an upcharge from the hotel if spouses stay at the hotel as well.

*Optional Activities for the weekend before and/or the Tuesday afternoon after our meeting officially ends are often proposed by delegates (see question below to volunteer to host or lead something and I will share out the list for your consideration by April, before you make your flight reservations).

PRACTICING HAKARAT HATOV/SHOUT OUTS

(LITERALLY, WHOMEVER HAS ONE, SHOUT IT OUT):

 Best new term or word?

Best (maybe new) organization you’ve learned of recently?

Best welcoming system, practice or gesture you’ve seen recently?

Best most recent strategy/technique for fighting antisemitism?

Best search committee hack?

Best onboarding for a new board member?

Other good news?

  • Jewish Kids Group, Jon Effron, Atlanta 18
  • Building a New Jewish High School, Katie Berger, Chicago 17

 CHOOSE YOUR BREAKOUT ROOM/FACILITATED CONVO:

ROOM 1 MAKING CHANGE: CONFIDENTIAL PEER CONSULTATION

“Making Change with a Board That “Mostly” Wants Change, a Staff That Doesn’t, and a New Executive Starting In June”
Randi Buergenthal, Baltimore 10

How can being a disrupter not be aggressively disruptive?  How do you master the art of bringing everyone along as you reposition and reinvigorate a 5-year-old agency, with a board that “mostly” wants change, a staff that doesn’t, and a new executive starting in June?  How do you balance the needs of a community with the directives of funders with the reality of participants?  There is so much potential—how can we create buy in and good will at the same time there is so much change?

ROOM 2 HEART TO HEART: FACILITATED CONVERSATION

“Love, Loyalty, and the Line: Guiding Our Children on Intermarriage”

Ernesto Levy, Cincinnati 19

Now that my kids are dating, I find myself quietly — and sometimes not so quietly — pushing them to date Jewish girls. But that’s not always who they bring home. I struggle with how hard to press the issue of Jewish continuity without creating resentment — or alienating a potential future daughter-in-law. I don’t want to issue threats or draw lines I can’t live with. And yet… I look at communities like Panama, where intermarriage is strongly discouraged — sometimes even socially sanctioned — and their intermarriage rate is under 5%. So where’s the line? How do we lead — as parents and as Jews — when love and legacy seem to pull in opposite directions?

ROOM 3 BEING REAL: FACILITATED CONVERSATION

“Jewish Identity Struggles? (Yes, Even Us)”

Jenni Goldson, Columbus 11

Curious if others are experiencing some version of:

  • I wear my Jewish Star/kippah/etc. but tuck it in when I go to certain places
  • Notice I’m toning up or down my staunch support for Israel vs my disgust/frustration with same, depending on who I’m speaking with/whether at home/shul or work/public
